The Ambassador was built as a DC-3 replacement, and the prototype first flew in 1947. G-ALZO, one of 20 delivered to BEA, served with the airline in its Elizabethan class from May 1950 to May 1960, when it was sold to the Royal Jordanian Air Force, who operated it as a VIP and transport aircraft. In 1963 it returned to the UK and, re-registered G-ALZO, served with independent airline Dan-Air until its last commercial flight in October 1971, when it was retired to the Dan-Air maintenance base at Lasham. In 1986 it was dismantled and transported by road to Duxford for preservation as part of the British Airliner Collection. G-ALZO is the only surviving Ambassador.
